Don't panic

by MarkJT @ 26 Jul. 2005 - 00:29:31

Our next door neighbours are Asian. We get on fine. The husband, Tubbs, supports West Ham and likes a beer. We’ve had a round of golf or two.

My family love the smells of Indian cooking wafting over the fence and delight even more in the taste when we're given a dish or two.

But we haven’t spoken since the 7th July so we’re thinking of inviting them over for a meal. No big coats, rucksacks or shoes allowed though.

They will also be subject to frisking before they come in.

Other than that I’m sure it will be a great evening.

Like your sense of humour-

It's so sad how some people have become more fearful of muslim people now that we have suffered from Alkaida attacks (Spelling?)

Did you know that the favorite dish of the British public is Tika Musala? I think that's a real sign of community and openess of most of the British population.

It is sad. Sad that we have become fearful of each other, because in the main.. we do not need to be. I hope you have your meal, a beer and, in spite of everything, a laugh at the absurdity of things.

liked the humour- however, tragic rather than focussing on terrorsim, the news and reports actually serve to incite cultural intolerance.Anyone with dark skin who was running for a bus or Tube could be thought to be about to detonate a bomb... how ridiculous?! I do wonder how many people can tell the difference between " brown skinned" people ie can we all tell the difference between someone who is indian vs pakistani ?? Asian.. are they hindu or muslim? do you know? do you care?

People also forget ( not that this is justification) but a lot of the backlash after 9/11 was because of our friedn George W...its a reposnse to British and US policy

have them round for dinner and as a gesture of goodwill maybe don't mention the rucksacks? long live multi cultural, multi faith and multi cuisined london!

Yeah our little country has plunged into a state of paranoia where every other person has become a suspect. I even found myself keeping my eyes open on the train now for dark featured people with ruck sacks and i'm ashamed of it.

Last autumn i travelled though Iran and Pakistan on my way to India. Before i left my friends and family warned me against going to those countries and i even got told by one ignorant person that i was going to get beheaded for being white over there.

So natually after all this talk i was quite nervous before going into these Islamic states. What a load of bollux! The Iranian and Pakistani were the nicest, most generous and infinatly warming of all people i met on my travels. Why? Because they were practicing Muslims (not like the %80 of the Turks), and it is in the Koran that they have to treat guests as well as they possibly can.

Shame we don't treat "guests" in our country quite as well. 7 bullets to the head more like.
