Boys don't cry

by MarkJT @ 19 Jul. 2008 - 20:31:01

Having three daughters means I rarely get the chance to kick a ball about or engage in more ‘rough and tumble’ stuff. It’s all Barbie and Littlest Pet Shop.

When I take them over the park I mustn’t push them too high on the swings or too fast on the roundabout.

But today was different. C and L, my two nephews came to visit.

‘Can we go over the park, Uncle Mark’ they asked more or less as soon as they arrived.

I was already stood by the front door with my trainers on and a football tucked under my arm.

‘Come on! Let’s go!’ I said excitedly. They broke into a run as we neared the park gate and I joined them. And what a joy it was to kick the ball high into the air as we entered – I felt like the captain of Arsenal coming out of the tunnel onto the pitch at the start of a game.

There we were, the three of us, in our own little football world kicking a ball about.

After a while they wanted to have a go on the swings and roundabout.

‘Higher, Uncle Mark!’ they shouted. ‘Faster!’

I was in heaven. L even come off the roundabout and did one of those little wobbly walks because he was so dizzy. I’d never been responsible for making anyone do that before.

Then they wanted to go back onto the swings.

‘Uncle Mark! Uncle Mark! See if you can hit us on the head with the ball!’ shouted L.

‘It doesn’t get any better than this,’ I thought.

So I took aim and kicked the ball. I missed but it hit the metal frame and bounced straight back in my face. Giving me a bloody nose.

‘Are you alright Uncle Mark?’ said C.

‘Hmmpphh, I’m fide,’ I managed.

‘I think we’d better get you home,’ replied C, taking my hand.

I wonder if they want to play Littlest Pet Shop when they next come round?

We used to play swing football ... aim the ball for Mini's foot. It wasn't a very successful game given the fact we had to keep collecting it from all the neighbour's gardens.

I don't believe the last bit ... you'll be booking them for weekly days out all holidays ;D

Only if they promise to play nicely.

i wrote this for my two

What is a daughter

She’s a joy she’s an angel’ well that’s what she thinks
She clings on to your heart like a plug to a sink
She drives you all crazy with make believe games
She’ll have you believe that fairies fly planes

She often comes in with imaginary friends
And can draw on their dads with those permanent pens
She has pretty parties with dolls as her mates
But then runs straight out and she swings on the gate

She listens to stories of love and romance
Then shoves a live frog in her best friends pants
At night when asleep the angels go quiet
I often do think that she could start a riot

She looks like a princess all said and done
And Uses mums lipstick to draw a big sun
All over the walls and down the settee
Her face is alive and she giggles with glee

Its then that you have to be strong and quite firm
For if you stand back she will never quite learn
And learn things she does almost every day
She learns how to get things her very own way

She came into your life and captured your heart
And then from that time you won’t stay apart
You may keep your son till he finds a good wife
But your daughters your daughter for all of her life

I have two boys and enjoy the 'rough and tumble'. The ball, Arsenal-banter, balancing on the bikes along the narrow path down the canal, running, trampolining, fighting, the lot. I fight with the best of them and jump the highest on the trampoline (well, I would, I am the heaviest).

However, I secretly long for pink ribbons and short frilly skirts, a little me-time sitting nicely and combing long hair, sharing a piece of chocolate cake that gets eaten daintily and doesn't get crumbs everywhere. I long for drawings of fairies and lilac duvet covers.

Instead, I get bruises on my thighs when they jump on me on the trampoline, and regret not being good with a ball; I wish they had an active dad like you ready to run to the park and push higher and higher on the swings.

As they say, the grass is always....

My girls must be nutters then. They always want to go higher and faster than everyone else and I'm covered in bruises from playing bundles. Most recently this evening after a sugar laden trip to the cinema. Still, looks like the eldest is just about to get into High School Musical and I promised to take her to see Mamma Mia next week. Strangely my husband doesn't seem interested in joining us. I wonder why?
